My first pc engine
« on: March 31, 2011, 09:53:55 AM »
I hope I'm posting this in the correct forum. I've just registered here as I bought my first pc engine console a couple of weeks back. Although I've played most older consoles, pc engine was something I'd always overlooked. I bought this core grafx 2 modded with RGB output and a region switch. I managed to get a bunch of games very cheaply too and I'm loving what I've tried so far. I'm glad to see that most loose hu cards are plentiful and cheap as I don't want any excess packaging these days. I love the megadrive so it's gonna be cool to see how various pc engine ports compare. I'm also a huge fan of chip music in general and I'm very impressed with the few games I've tried out so far. The music was one of the main factors that drew me to this lovely little console.

 :)

Best chip music out of those games:

Gunhed, Legendary Axe 1 & 2, Violent Soldier, and Bloody Wolf.

I'm guessing that little black switch on the right side there.  :-"

Thanks for all the nice messages folks.

As someone pointed out, it has a region switch on the side so I don't need any adapters to play US games.

I am tempted to pick up a cd rom unit add on but I'm trying to take things slowly and play only hu cards to start. Besides, I'm not sure how I'd get RGB output from a CD rom unit and modding is expensive.

At the moment, I looking out for loose hu cards of soldier blade, cyber core, download, pyscho chaser, ninja spirit and a US turbo grafx version of Dungeon Explorer which is proving hard to find. Japanese games appear to be much cheaper and more plentiful but with something like dungeon explorer I really don't want to be using faqs to muddle my way through Japanese text.

I agree about the music in Gunhed, it's incredibly good and I fear it may have set the bar too high by playing it first.

Hi, Moonie.  If your PCE Core II has RGB output already, then even when it's connected to a CD-ROM unit, it'll keep outputting RGB just fine.  Where is the RGB output?  A jack on one of the sides?  If so, then you need a rear-attaching Super CD-ROM2 unit, not the old briefcase unit which may prevent access to the RGB jack.
