Opportunity to buy CD ROM
« on: April 06, 2011, 05:21:13 AM »
I have an opportunity to buy an unboxed CD unit for $80 (£50).  It's on its own without the interface or Hucard unit, but the problem with anything including those is the shipping.  Plus, I've seen a lot of units sold without the CD, or with a broken CD unit, but closer to home.

If the aim is a complete boxed system, is £50 a good deal?

Are you talking about just the white CD-ROM2 unit, no IFU or PC Engine? $80 plush shipping. Seems a little high to me.

Yeah, that's the one.

Complete boxed units are going for ~£200 on eBay, along with a complete mint one for £250.

Plus, I'm confused at the variation in boxes.  There seems to be a briefcase box, a CD box, and a CD and PCE box.  Maybe even a briefcase box.

Seems rather high for a loose drive, and it ain't what you really want anyway (good luck buying just an interface and the boxes separately).

Were the CD-ROM and IFU sold separately in boxes? I've never seen that.

Yep.  When first introduced they were sold separately but were soon after sold bundled together.

They were for about a year (tax reasons).

If you are looking for a complete boxed system then just buy a complete boxed system. Its going to be hard ever get just the box on its own. Also, a CDROM2 without an IFU is completely useless.

Yeah, it's working.

I can see plenty of IFU's seperately, some including boxes, where it looks like the CD ROM unit is broken.

Actually, not "completely" useless. They do make rather snazzy cases for loose copies of Princess Maker 2 CDs.
