HES Audio on CD/SCD Titles

Hi

I have noticed over at http://namida.com/kaminarimon/hes/ that there are some HES files listed for CD/SCD titles. 

Am I correct in presuming that some CD titles contained Chip Tunes in addition to CD based Audio?

Yeah, mostly sort of digital comics like snatcher etc.

It's also used often for short events where loading a new track doesn't make much sense (like battles in RPGs).

The Ys games use them for towns, & treasure chests.  The Legend of Xanadu games are almost entirely chip tunes!

Yeah, mostly sort of digital comics like snatcher etc.

There aren't many (any?) CD games that have ONLY CD audio. Most have chiptunes here and there to improve the loading times. Too much CD audio and you end up with stuff like Cosmic Fantasy 2.

Hey now the load times are well worth the wait in Cosmic Fantasy 2.

Some crappy games like Altered beast and even good games like Blood Gear have no CD audio :(

Hey now the load times are well worth the wait in Cosmic Fantasy 2.

The load times for the cinemas, sure, but waiting for the track to seek for every fight, back to map, back to fight, back to map sequence is bullshit, especially since you just end up hearing the first 3 seconds of each song over and over again and never the rest of it.

For an example of how to do a MUCH better job and music transitions into and back out of random battles, see Tengai Makyo II. Zero waiting for music access. Decent chip tunes for the fight. AMAZING map music. End result: better music, better fights. The fights that take 1/16 the time and you get to hear the entire piece of music.

In my experience, almost all CD RPGs contain chiptunes to some extent. Some are even exclusively chiptunes outside of the cutscenes.

That's my biggest gripe about Cosmic Fantasy 2! I couldn't finish the game because of it. I am a stickler for a great musical experience during gaming and when I can't hear more than a few secs of each song I get rather irritated!

Sherlock Holmes 1(2 has one redbook song on it IIRC) & Addams Family have no audio tracks....though, most the audio in those games are adpcm, rather then just pcm.

That's what is awesome about Dragon Slayer. You get to choose between CD or PSG music. :)
