Anyone here like comic books?
« on: April 19, 2011, 10:46:40 AM »
I just got back into them and man do I regret selling all my old CONAN comics, the prices have skyrocketed.

Anyways I actually like comics because I READ them in the night time when they come alive for some reason, daytime just isnt the same, NEVER read them in the day.

I am collecting all the early IMAGE comics stuff, my favorite all time hero is SHADOWHAWK, second to BLOODSHOT, its kinda cool these comics are early 90s pre first person shooters and yet in Bloodshot he has the "max payne" or "f.e.a.r." ability to slow down time to take everyone out.

I got my all time favorite series half collected, Ghost Rider vol.2 with Dan Ketch. Too bad I'm jobless again so now all I can do is read and not collect.

I used to collect comics through the 90's.  I was really big into Image Comics.  I have pretty much all of the early release #1's from them.  I kept them all, but haven't seen them in probably 10 years.  They are in storage at my parent's place.  I don't keep up with it so I have no idea if those are even worth anything.  Growing up my favorite comic book hero was Spawn.  I had every Spawn comic made by Image up to I think 1995 (Spawn 1-100 for sure), and all the breakoffs up to that point.

With me right now I have 2 original Spawn The Undead cover art proofs (signed by the colorist) up on my wall.  The covers for Spawn Undead #7 and #8.  These were the final images that were approved by McFarlane for the comic book covers.  And I have a Marvel Spiderman silver edition signed on the front by McFarlane on my wall.  And 2 Amazing Spiderman comics signed by McFarlane and graded.  These are #'s 312 and 318.

Since that was the era I grew up in as well, and my favorite, I looked into it. It seems all our #1's are worthless since they printed so many of them. Unless we start buying em all up and destroying them, they will never be worth much.

Well that sucks.  I figured they weren't worth much, but was hoping I was wrong.

Awesome.  I went to high school with a kid who claimed his uncle was Todd Mcfarlane.  The kid's last name was Mcfarlane and he had a New England accent, so there's a chance it was true...

I was a big comic book collector back from the mid-80's to the early/mid-90's.  I have an issue of the Incredible Hulk autographed by Todd Mcfarlane.  And I went to the San Diego ComiCon (way before it was renamed the International ComiCon) back in the late 80's (maybe 88?) and met the Uncanny X-Men crew: Tom Defalco, Chris Clairmont, and Marc Silvestri (and had them sign a handful of issues I picked up at the show).  That was one of the highlights of my life up to that point. :D

Unfortunately, my storage  unit was robbed a few years back and most of my comics were stolen.  I still have a handful of my most prized comics (ones that I kept at the house), but I still feel sick thinking of the 500+ comics that are gone...

I was a big "looker" of comic books when I was a kid.  I honestly didn't read them much, but the pictures were damn cool.  I was mostly a Marvel guy, more specifically Ghost Rider (my favorite) and X-Men.

The last few years I have been reading a graphic novel or two each month, since that medium has really made reading complete stories a hell of a lot easier.  Some of my favorites I've read are Superman: Red Son, The Death/World Without/Return of Superman, Old Man Logan, Watchmen, and The Walking Dead.

Anyone have any recommendations of a story where I may not need to know a whole lot of background to the characters?  Superman I know pretty well, so I have enjoyed a lot of Superman books.  I tried to read Batman RIP, and I honestly was a little bit out of it, so it wasn't too enjoyable.

Any of the Batman: Year graphic novels I thought were really good (of course just about anything by Frank Miller is totally badass).  Also, Batman: The Killing Joke is really good.  I was never a big fan of collecting Batman comic books, but there were some awesome graphic novels about him!

Wow...that sucks.  Sorry to hear that happened.  I think I'd be sick every time I thought about it too.

I agree, that sucks so bad.  Hopefully it isn't too late for us to put on some capes and get the one that wronged you?

BTW, the Killing Joke was pretty good as well, I actually got a kick out of the end.  Joker was great on Letterman in Dark Knight Returns too.

I go to this horror/comic book/video games/anime/sci-fi thing each year in Toronto.  Apparently it is the second biggest convention of its type, after San Diego (which I am sure blows it away in scale).  http://www.fanexpocanada.com/

Well, I have since moved roughly 3000 miles so while it would be awesome to don capes and romp around the neighborhood (my sons 3rd birthday is around the corner and he's requested we do something along those lines!) it probably wouldn't do much to bring my comic books back.

Wow, that con looks pretty awesome.  Looks like it's about the same time as the San Diego one as well, if I remember correctly.

Wow, just saw this thread.  I used to love collecting/reading Comics.  Of course it pretty much died off when I got older.  Never found the time to read, or the moneys to keep up with them.

In the town I grew up in, there was a hobby shop that had a nickel box of old beat up comics and I used to dig through it for hidden gems!  I got most of my old collection this way!  LOL
I first got hooked on DC's Warlords and Marvel's ElfQuest in the late 80's.  Then got heavy into Forgotten Realms and Dragon Lance (More DC).  I guess then I just got hooked on the DC universe with Batman (Kelly Jones years), some superman, Black Canary, Green Lantern, LOBO (f*cking love LOBO)and a few Vertigo's.  I also loved Judge Dredd.

Was into Spawn in the mid 90's.  then kind of got burned out in the late 90's.  Got into MegaTokyo, Scott Pilgrim, and Ranma 1/2 manga's a few years ago.  And I still pick up random graphic novels every now and again.  Marvel Zombies, Watchmen, and Transmetroplitan are pretty badass books!

Its such a cool idea, I wonder why more comics don't do this, just put like 3 years worth of comics together and sell 'em as a graphic novel.  I'd probably buy more of my fav's if more comics came out this way.

You'll still see me rifling through boxes of comics at shops if they got 'em cheap :P

Prior to the great comic crash of the mid 90s I used to collect and read lots of comics.

When the industry crashed I only kept buying two comics regularly. Bone, and Thieves and Kings.
