I always played Star Control 2 on PC with an old Gravis gamepad... still do if I ever go back and play it.  Too bad modern computers dont come with joystick ports anymore (or ide connectors, or FDD connectors, or serial / parallel ports, or ISA slots, or .... )

If you download the version from GOG.com it comes with Joypad support. No voice acting though.

I have to admit, the voice acting was done really well in the 3DO version.  While I like the DOS version for nostalgia.. the 3DO version really didn't do anything to hurt the core game, they only improved it.  That in itself is an amazing feat!
