Another Save/Capacitor Question
« on: May 09, 2011, 03:57:47 AM »
I know next to nothing about electronic components so forgive me if this is a dumb question, but I am wondering:  How long will the energy in the supercapacitor last before it needs to recharged?  That is, how long can an unplayed and powered-off system maintain its saved games?

Just in case any newbies other than myself come searching for this information, I found a somewhat vague answer here: gamesave.faq.  Short version is: "several months".  Good to know!

A lot of people still have their saves even after a year or more. I guess it all depends on the condition of the capacitors. Whenever I get around to replacing all the caps in my briefcase setup, I might go with a larger capacity cap just for the hell of it.

Wow!  Nice faq!  This has a very good detailed explanation of on using the TEN NO KOE BANK.  Now I know exactly what every function does.  I printed the guide half of the faq out for my future use.

Cool, that's encouraging!

I thought so, too.  I saved it in case I get one in the future.

What do you mean "in case [you] get one"? Haha, I guess you haven't played the system long enough to fill up the internal memory yet. Save yourself the time later and just order one now :D

Some people consider the PC Engine to have a small save memory, but I think it's comparable to a Playstation One memory card. You can fit a dozen 'normal' game saves on it, but you'll come across a few games that take up a third of the memory by themselves. What the hell were the programmers thinking? I'm looking at you, Cosmic Fantasy 1.
Anyway, The TenNoKoe is a pretty badass thing to have. Plus they have 4 memory banks, so you get the added bonus of seeing what games some random guy in Japan was playing back in the 90s. It's like an easter egg :D

I got a Tennokoe 2 that plugs into the back of my white PCE. Its a pretty cool thing to have. ITs better than writing down all those codes.

Might and Magic III comes to my mind... before having a Ten No Koe card, I remember having to delete my Nuetopia, Dragon Slayer and Cosmic Fantasy 2 saves just so I could play Might and Magic III... MMIII is a damn good game though...

True!  Most of the games I own at present do not seem to save anything, but I given how many good RPGs the PCE has I am sure this won't last long!  The comparison with the PS1 is apt: I recall dedicating a couple of memory cars exclusively to Civilization 2 for a while....  I guess I should have said "when" instead of "if".  ^^
