Fantasy/Adventure book recommendations please
« on: May 14, 2011, 01:09:38 PM »
I just played through Ys 1+2 and watch Record of Lodoss War recently and am interested in reading a book in the same vein. I've never read a book in this genre and am not interested in teen vampire romance. Any Recommendations for a single title that isn't a long series? The more it is like reading a manga the better.
Thanks I know there are a lot of nerdy people on here so I'm sure someone can recommend something

Azure Bonds.

Its a forgotten Realms novel.

Forgotten Realms wise:
Cleric Quintet
Icewind Dale
the elminster series

Dragonlance:
Land of the Minotaurs
Kaz the Minotaur!

then theres some older Gygax novels

Azure Bonds is really great though

I have a ton more I could go sift through and recommend, if you want.   I'm an avid fantasy novel reader, lol

though if you want fast/light reading, you might want to just check out the old Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance comic books instead.   Lots of fantasy novels aren't really quick readers .

There are some new graphic novels too.  There were some sweet Drizzt ones.

Second the Icewind Dale books.  Or the Belgariad series by David Eddings.  I don't know if either are much like reading manga, by they are great fantasy reading!

I guess its considered fantasy, but I read The Bartimaeus Trilogy a bit back, it was pretty entertaining.  (I should say I listened to it.. audio books are amazing things)  The main character has a very entertaining personality.

yeah, were getting there, lolol.

Theres another series I cant remember right now, I am going to dig through my books for it.

Working at a library during highschool ruled so hard.

they throw out the older stuff that doesnt circulate well.

AND THEN I CLIMB IN THE DUMPSTERS AND RETRIEVE IT.

Xanth- Spell for Chameleon and Source of Magic is all I've read thus far, and yea its pretty excellent!!
Could also try the Myth series by Robert Aspirin.

I read Pool of Radiance (Forgotten Realms) and that's pretty damn good.

you can't go wrong with some Margaret Weis, Tracy Hickman, RA Salvatore, or Terry Brooks as well.

I just started my first Shadowrun novel 'Nights Pawn', I'm looking to get into the Never make a deal with a Dragon books next.  Damn fine stuff here, mixes the scifi futuristics with magic and fantasy from medieval times :D

good stuff, good thread.  gonna look around for some of those suggested!  :D

Wow. Never read a fantasy book? That's almost as bad as most people I know...who have only read fantasy books.

Since you are starting from nothing, I'd have to recommend the Hobbit, Lord of the Rings (series) and the Chronicles of Narnia. Reading this now will prevent you from being needlessly amazed by derivative works that game 50 years later.

The original Dragon Lance stuff is pretty cool.

Honestly I'm more of a sci fi guy, so after you play Cosmic Fantasy and are inspired to read books in that genre, I'll be more helpful. :)

The hobbit is a boring book.  I wouldn't suggest anyone read that if they're new to this whole thing unless they want to fall asleep.
