Saving in Beyond Shadowgate
« on: September 09, 2005, 06:11:49 AM »
Hi! 1st time poster and will be here ALOT as I just received my NEC PC Engine Duo-R in the mail :D
I have been using Magic Engine and could not pass up getting this system I never had. (Being a 50yr old gamer...I cannot believe I never bought this system-I have almost all of the old systems)
Anyway, does anyone know how you save in Beyond Shadowgate on the real deal? I know the save states in Magic Engine...but I have asked 2 people familiar with the console and neither know...
Thanks! 8)

I dont know about saving...I mean I just hit Start or Select...one of those...a menu pops up and I save...thats it...but I have something I bet you have prolly never seen pop up in Beyond Shadowgate...check it out...

Hey everybody. I was playing Beyond Shadowgate the other day when I notice something. I mean it happened so fast I though I was seeing things to be honest. So I took some screenshots and upon examination I found that I did infact see a whole new animation in Beyond Shadowgate.

Here are my screenshots pulled out using Magic Engine. Now this may contain questionable material so open at your own risc.

Here you go check it out:

Press RUN to pause the game.

Use the Direction Key to move the red arrow over and down below three red(blue files load) files.

Press "I" to choose a file to save onto.

Thanks Black_Tiger...I don't know if you can save anywhere as I tried that and it looks like it only takes after you have progressed a certain amount in the game.
And I know my Duo is OK for saving as other games save fine 8)

Only one other thing I can think of: your memory might be full and thus not allowing you to save. On the start-up title screen, press "Select" and then choose "Delete". Don't worry, this won't delete anything yet, but it will allow you to view all of your save files.

Just be careful not to delete anything while you're looking around. A prompt will ask you if you really want to delete something, so as long as you don't have turbo switches on, you should be fine :)

Here's a thread related to this game save issue:

good luck

When I played through it last, it always saved me in the current or last screen I was at. So I don't know whats going on with your game unless you're accidently loading instead of saving.

You know Black_Tiger...that could be it. I did not get a game manual OR a System Manual so I am just guessing when it comes to saving the game. I know I bring up the screen with the load/save options...but I am really not sure which buttons on the Duo Controller save or load...you know for sure?
I know other games save fine..so the memory is ok in the system...but then again, I am guessing on saving with them as well (no manuals).
Is there a place anywhere on the 'net you can download maunals to the PC Engine Games, or a manual for the System itself? That would probably solve alot of problems...

To expand on what's been said above.  :D  From my manual -

The SAVE/LOAD Feature

Saving Your Game

1. Press RUN to pause the game.
2. Use the Direction Key to move the red arrow to choose among the three red Files for save.
3. Press Button 1 after choosing a File. The game is now saved and you can resume playing game.

*You have three spaces in which you can save games in progress. It is important to save often since you only have one life to use in the game. If the game has not been saved and you lose you life, you will need to start over at the beginning of the game!

Loading a Saved Game During the Game:

1. Press RUN to pause the game.
2. Use the Direction Key to move the red arrow over and down below three blue Files.
(Note: A disk with an X instead of a number means it is an empty spot, and there is no saved game present).
3. Press Button 1 to continue the chosen game from the point that the game was last saved.

At the Title Screen:

1. Use the Direction Key to move the flashing arrow down to the desired saved game.
2. Press Button 1 to confirm.

There was a site with manuals to download (Dritz, you still around?) but it has dissapeared. I have them backed up on cd and if someone wants to take it upon themselves to continue this project I'd be happy to help out. If I remember, I'll put a link here to the Beyond Shadowgate manual in PDF form tomorrow.

Hope this helps! If you need any other help just let me know.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

That was easy.

I always thought they should've left the items list out of the manual. Gives to much of the game away.

If anyone knows a site (or a way to put them up) where there are manuals for Duo games...would be much appreciated.
Aka...Dracula X, Sapphire, YsIV, and Xak III.
Got alot of other games too 8)
