Some random ideas
« on: June 01, 2011, 12:44:34 AM »
Just a few random ideas here...

1st thing, is ...  Sometimes games get neglected because you don't think off the top of your head "oh I want to play that".  Unless you have some layout where all of your games are visible, it's hard to get a good overall look at your collection.

So my first suggestion is with Daisakusen - since that already stores all of your PCE game, can we possibly look at some kind of java pop-up grid, just showing cover art?  Then if each screen has 5x5 or more games, and you can click along.

So, just putting that out there.

Secondly, another great site, PCEngine.co.uk, isn't in any kind of database, just static pages.  It would probably be of benefit to have a searchable database, though obviously it depends whether Paul has the time/means/inclination.  If you do though Paul, I'd be prepared to muck in.

Thirdly, it might be good to have a similar thing for the Megadrive, but I'll post that on Sega16.

So hope this is taken in the right way ("suggestions" rather than "meddling" say), but I thought I'd see what everyone else thinks.

The main problem is I have absolutely zero knowledge of databases and whatnot. If I did, I cannot imagine converting the whole site over would be a quick task would it? I already spent a whole year remaking the latest version, I don't want to go through all that again!

However, if it's a five minute job and easy to understand then I'm all ears. I'd love to add functionality (like grahf suggested in the other thread). I just lack the skills.

I've always wanted to to a Software Bible equivalent for the Master System, Mega Drive and even ZX Spectrum. I'd never find the time though, not will all the OBEYing I have on at the moment, and I'm not sure I could do better than what's already out there. I'd love to see that though.

one cool thing about PCEngine.co.uk is that when you find a game you like, if you look at the bottom of the screen it gives a few recommendations of similar games. That is a great feature.

I've got enough know-how for everyone, but TBH, it might be best left as it is.  I'm not gonna request access to your server or something, and it would be difficult to explain it to you and have you do it.

But as far as the work would actually go, since you have the data already, it's just a matter of copypasta-ing into a collaborative spreadsheet.  If everyone here were to muck in, and we divided the alphabet into chunks, it would probably take a solid days work.

It would be awesome if PCE Daisakusen and pcengine.co.uk  had a web-baby.

Yeah soop-
shoot them an email and get started on it.

I always thought that there needed to be an updated (user friendly!) data-base.

#-o But since no one knows what the heck a TG or PCE is,...I figured I better not complain about the info that is already out there.

Good luck!  :o

I don't store my games in alpha order at home.

They're shelved, but never in order.

So I usually just close my eyes and grab one.

then, I put it at the end of the row.  I never grab at the end.

it really sucks when I grab TV SUCKS SPORTS games.  Those usually go to the end without being played.

I have all my Hucards laid out in two rows under my TV (at about waist height).  Running out of space though, so I've put lesser games under good ones.

My dream, years ago, was to have a big sheet of clear plastic with pockets in it.  Some games have nice artwork, and you get to see them all at once.

However, my girlfriend probably wouldn't like it, and TBH, it wouldn't really fit the room.
